Music videos for debut singles present the unique challenge of creating a brand for an artist on top of the usual task of providing imagery that propels the music. I spent days concepting the style for Sandy Socks (my own artist title) before landing on one that fit my tastes. Once a style was developed, I worked with producer Avery Grasse to come up with a story and theme for the video. We decided on the concept of a homeless woman coming across a house, sneaking in, and spending a few hours pretending to live an elegant lifestyle. Then, we thought it would be more realistic and relatable to show a teenage girl doing the same, with an added sense of jealousy. When thinking of actors who would fit the role, the one that kept coming back to my mind was Paris Warner from Once I Was a Beehive. I was able to get ahold of her booking agent and we worked out a reasonable price. A lot of that was admittedly luck as well as much kindness on Paris’ part. Two weeks later we met in a rented house location in Utah and got to work. My DP, Mason Miller, shot on a BMPCC 4k using all vintage glass. Man, some good memories were made.
I edited the video in DaVinci Resolve and that was that….The end.
